IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 - Consumption of Food

There are three basic things you need to structure an IELTS writing task 1.

  1. Introduce the graph
  2. Give an overview
  3. Give the detail

The line graph compares the fast food consumption of teenagers in Australia between 1975 and 2000, a period of 25 years.

Overall, the consumption of fish and chips declined over the period, whereas the amount of pizza and hamburgers that were eaten increased.

In 1975, the most popular fast food with Australian teenagers was fish and chips, being eaten 100 times a year. This was far higher than Pizza and hamburgers, which were consumed approximately 5 times a year. However, apart from a brief rise again from 1980 to 1985, the consumption of fish and chips gradually declined over the 25 year timescale to finish at just under 40.

In sharp contrast to this, teenagers ate the other two fast foods at much higher levels. Pizza consumption increased gradually until it overtook the consumption of fish and chips in 1990. It then levelled off from 1995 to 2000. The biggest rise was seen in hamburgers as the occasions they were eaten increased sharply throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, exceeding that of fish and chips in 1985. It finished at the same level that fish and chips began, with consumption at 100 times a year.

The graph presents data showing of consumption of Fast Food by Australian Teenagers from 1975 to 2000.The chart is divided into 3 parts: Pizza, Fish and Chips and Hamburgers. According to the graph, in 1975 most popular fast food product was Fish and Chips. But after 25 year gradually felt to minimum value. While hamburgers and pizzas rapidly increased to nearly three quarters. Crucial moment in fat sphere was in 1985. Fish and chips started to rapidly decrease, whereas another fats gradually increased. Number of times when people eated pizzas in 1976-2000 rapidly increased in four times. What means that pizza-industry climbs up. This three categories was the most popular fast food since 1975. They undergoes big changes, especial sharp decrease of fish and chips. To summarize all of this I can say that the graph provides strong evidence that fish and chips went out of style. In contrast pizza, which now on the top of the popularity.

Often you are asked to compare a situation now with the same situation in the past.

One way of describing how things have changed is to use “used to”.  We use it to refer to facts or situations that were true in the past but are not true now.  When the change occurred is not important. Example:

“Vietnam used to be a colony of France, (but now it is independent)”

“Jimmy Carter used to be the President of the United States, (but now he isn’t.)”

This can, of course be used to give personal information.

“I used to smoke, (but I gave up 2 years ago.)”

“Mike used to be a detective in the CID, (but now he’s a teacher)”

Comparatives

In these types of questions the function being tested is “compare”, so using comparatives is obviously a good way of answering the question and speaking about change.

Example:

"Thirty years ago, the streets were much quieter than now.”

“I think that reading was much more popular in the past.”

When talking about how things are different now, the present perfect is often used as well as the present simple.

“The streets have become much noisier these days.” (Notice, a specific time is not needed)

“Reading is much less popular than it was in the past.”
